Utopean dreams // phrenology

digital print

from ‘Character From The Face’ by Jacques Penry 1956

Taken from a typically dubious book of phrenology. Mapping self and identity across physiognomy. One tool used by the Victorians to ‘scientifically’ justify the lower orders place at the bottom of their society. Clearly continued by this individual into the 1950’s and echoing some of the beliefs embedded in eugenics.

    • This ear is small, and indicates selfish temperament. He likes to point out that indicators should be used in conjunction – so it is not enough to see that a person has a small ear, ones features (angle of forehead, breadth of mouth etc…) add up to an assessment.

It is gob-smacking in banality & arrogance. And cretinous.

      • Nothing like completely making up stuff and claiming it’s a science to support your nasty views. Think of all that misdirected energy.
